A lifelong Demons fan, Lovett was recruited to the Melbourne Under 19's in 1986 and played Teal Cup - with a taste of reserve grade - before making his senior debut in 1987.
He played two games that year before missing the entire 1988 season. 1989 saw him add just five more games to his tally. Lovett finally cemented his spot in the side in 1991 playing as a wingman and half-back, but his bad run with injuries continued when he suffered a broken arm. The next two years were his best year for the club. He won the 1992 Best and Fairest and finished second in 1993. That year the tough on-baller with silky skills won Victorian selection and finished 2nd in The Age's Footballer of the Year behind Garry Hocking.
After seemingly putting his injuries behind him, Lovett played only 11 games in 1994 because of back and hamstring injuries. He managed 18, 15 and 14 over the next three seasons but by then the Demons were a spent force. After battling hamstring injuries which kept him to one game each in 1998 and 1999 Lovett retired midway through the '99 season.
He earned a total of 28 Brownlow Votes during his career.
