Originally drafted from Modewarre by Adelaide with pick 8 in the 2004 National Draft, Meesen suffered from injuries and lack of form and failed to break into a Crows strong ruck division until Round 20, 2007.

At the end of that season he was traded to Melbourne for draft pick 38 and spent the next year struggling for form at VFL affiliate Sandringham. With the retirement of Jeff White at the end of 2007, and early season injury to Mark Jamar, Meesen returned to Adelaide to make his debut against Port in round 4 of 2008. He retained his spot for the next three weeks, including Melbourne's first win of the season against Richmond before succumbing to stress fractures in his foot and missing the rest of the season.

In November 2009, on the last day before list lodgement Meesen was delisted. The club agreed to re-draft him under new rookie list rules as long as no other club selected him first. He was not selected in the National or Pre-Season drafts, and Melbourne re-selected him with pick 22 in the Rookie Draft.

Meesen failed to play a match in 2010 due to his injuries and worked with the Casey Scorpions as a ruck-coach. In August Meesen announced through his Twitter account that he was undergoing another operation which would stop him from playing in 2011?.
